There is a common opinion that it takes a new mom at least nine months to lose weight after pregnancy, because that’s the period during which those kilos are gained. However, it is quite possible to get back to your pre-pregnancy weight without waiting for so long.
Go on a Special Diet
Some women think that dieting and breastfeeding are incompatible, but this opinion proves wrong when it concerns a smart diet. You may start it a couple of weeks after the delivery if you feel you need some time to recover. Increase the amount of fiber-rich and whole grain products and exclude sweets, high-fat foods and processed products with lots of additives. Organic food is the best choice in case you can afford it. Make sure your nutrition is balanced and you consume enough vitamins and minerals.
Most women will need to consume around 2000 calories per day to lose weight without damaging their health, but you will need to adjust this figure depending on your metabolism and energy losses.
Stock healthy snacks in advance
The first few months after the baby is born, women hardly have any time for a normal meal, so they usually eat snacks. Unfortunately, in most cases these are not the waist-friendly foods. Therefore, you should prepare portions of healthy products and store them in the fridge for such situations. Fruit, vegetables, and low-fat yogurt will make a perfect snack.
Nursing your baby is not only very good for its health. It can help you lose your weight quicker and easier, because your body spends a lot of energy to produce milk. In fact, you can lose around 500 calories every day just feeding the baby with your milk.
Moreover, the hormones responsible for breastfeeding and released in the process do help your uterus shrink which also makes you slimmer.
Most women would admit that even if they manage to lose weight after pregnancy, they still can’t get rid of the belly fat. It seems that no exercising can affect those waist kilos. This happens because the abdominal muscles and skin stretch while you bear your baby and normal workouts will hardly make any difference. The best solution here is to start wearing a special post-pregnancy bandage, also called a belly wrap or a tummy binder. They tighten the belly muscles and help to shrink the fat. Note, that you will probably need to wear it on a daily basis for at least 4-5 weeks, but the end result will be worth it.
However, women who have undergone the cesarean section should wait several weeks before they can bind their tummy.
Involve your baby in your workouts
Some women confess that motherhood leaves them no time for a proper physical activity.
Even if you can’t afford a babysitter to look after the baby while you go to the gym this doesn’t mean you can’t exercise. In fact, parenting a newborn involves a lot of exercising and you do spend energy and burn calories caring for your child. Why not go further and add some strength training activities involving your baby? You can start from 4-5 arm-lifts and sit-ups per day and then increase the sets and also add more sophisticated exercises.
Dancing with a baby is another fun and easy way to get back into shape. Put on your favorite music and dance or just move around with your baby. This is the way some professional dancers recover after pregnancy and birth.
Don’t be frustrated if you don’t progress the way you planned. Stay motivated and high-spirited because these are the keys to success.
